Pro-Active Solutions for the Prevention and Treatment
of Personally-generated Body System Dysfunctions
The health of the community is getting worse.
We are in the midst of an epidemic of personally-generated metabolic, musculo-skeletal and mental health dysfunction. That's the bad news. The good news is that if a dysfunction has been personally generated there is a good chance that it can be personally-ungenerated.
From the Pro-Active Rehab perspective, a key underlying cause of this epidemic is a lack of physical fitness - aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility - coupled with dietary insufficiency and a range of debilitating lifestyle behaviours.
The failure of current primary health care interventions to adequately diagnose and treat the underlying causes of these dysfunctions, is fuelling the epidemic, not bringing it to a halt.
That's because when dealing with lifestyle problems, it is only on the rarest of occasions that they can successfully resolved with the medical solutions that are currently being provided. many don't want to lift as much as a finger to help themselves.
A feature of contemporary medical practice is that the patient doesn't want to be intimately involved in the solution. They want to be patched up by their doctor and chemist.
The Pro-Active rehab solution requires people to do something themselves to restore poor function to good.
The current medical practice of prescribing drugs to mask the symptoms of body system dysfunctions masquerades as 'preventive health'.
Expensive medical diagnostic instruments fail to diagnose the underlying cause of many conditions - which leads to treatments which do not restore poor function to good. Poor health gets worse. Rarely does an MRI scan locate the cause of the problems it detects.
The simple has become complicated, the cheap expensive and the transparent opaque.
The Pro-Active Rehab concept is designed to encourage people improve their own health, by first putting themselves in the hands of a health professional trained in Pro-Active Rehab methods.
In particular it's part of move to drive the fitness industry into the front line of primary health care.
Pro-Active Rehab brings to the fitness, medical and manipulative therapy industries a new set of assessments and prescriptions designed to deal more effectively with the personally-generated body system dysfunctions.
The aim is to restore poor function to good.
In the case of metabolic and mental health, a vigorous aerobic fitness training program plays a key role in the restoration process.
A strength and flexibility training program forms the basis of treatment for musculo-skeletal dysfunction.
The Pro-Active Rehab method promises people a fair assessment of their metabolic, musculo-skeletal and mental health condition, coupled with an ability to prescribe a course of action to improve it.
The Pro-Active Rehab aim is to prescribe exercise of sufficient frequency, intensity and duration to stimulate the body's own recuperative power.
In essence, Pro-Active Rehab has at its core an educational bias, the aim being to teach, inspire and motivate people to become their own therapists and exercise in a way that poor function is restored to good.
Pro-Active Rehab uses a range of assessments to aid in the diagnostic and prescription process. These assessments and prescriptions are new to the fitness, medical and other allied health fields.
Form follows function
The medical industry believes that function follows form. But no-one ever improved their aerobic fitness by taking Gliclazide, Lipitor and Avapro!
The fitness industry believes that form follows function. Improve aerobic fitness and chances are you'll improve the heath of those systems that control blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
Improving aerobic fitness may lead to an elevation in mood.
Improving strength and flexibility leads to better alignment of the skeleton and a reduction in joint and muscle pain.
We're advocating the use of smart technology so individuals, their doctors and fitness practitioners can keep track of vital diagnostic and prescription markers. The technology is now there to remotely monitor whether a person is 'taking' their aerobic fitness prescription.
The diagnosis and treatment of poor metabolic health often begins and ends with the discovery of a symptom - high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar ... But without an assessment of aerobic fitness or diet, the enquiry into the causes of the major signs of metabolic dysfunction is compromised. And if the diagnosis is compromised then it's likely that the prescription will also be compromised.
Of all the tests of metabolic health, the test of aerobic fitness is the most critical. The medical industry will measure everything but - weight, blood pressure, blood glucose and blood cholesterol but only on the rarest of occasions, aerobic fitness. If it is measured the test will be complicated and expensive.
We've developed the five minute, 20m run as the industry standard aerobic fitness test.
We've also developed the Aerabyte aerobic fitness prescription where time and effort (rated against heart rate) are the core elements.
Until now neither the fitness industry, nor the medical industry have been able to prescribe aerobic physical activity in the 'right' dosage. It has been impossible to gauge whether people are getting better. When aerobic fitness improves, the function of key metabolic systems improves.
Pro-Active Rehab started off focussing on musculo-skeletal dysfunction, having come to the conclusion that medical diagnosis of the underlying cause of lower back pain in particular and prescriptions targeted at the cause were almost non-existent.
Most doctors are unable to pinpoint the cause of lower back pain. The lead given by the National Health and Medical Research Council is less than helpful.
Being unable to determine the cause, doctors send their clients off to the radiologist. The radiologists don't know where to look for the cause of the problem either. Worse still, because of a demarcation dispute between radiologists and general practitioners, the radiologists are constrained from giving an opinion as to the cause of the problem.
The radiologist will only tell the doctor 'what 'is'.
The clients returns to the doctor with the X-ray. The doctor looks at it, parrots the radiologists comment - but still doesn't know what's caused the problem. Likely as not they'll blame a recent incident, like lifting something.
When it's all said and done, the best the doctor can do is recommend a range of manipulative therapies. However, lower back pain is not caused by a lack of rubbing, crunching, heating, vibrating, strapping at the site of the pain. Neither is it caused by a lack of doping.
Finally the person ends up in front of a surgeon, Not knowing the underlying cause of the problem the surgeon recommends surgery. It's known as the Mandy Rice Davies option.
To cut a long story short a $100 problem ends up as a $20,000 problem, most of the cost being funded by the tax payer. In America it may end up as an $80,000 problem - and if you troll the back pain chat rooms, the number of people who have had a back operation and are still in pain is legion. Wrong diagnosis leads to wrong treatment.
Ask any group of people how they rate the current condition of their musculo-skeletal system and 50% will give themselves 5/10 or worse. Most have no idea of the cause of the problem, other than to reveal an incident from either the recent or dim, dark past. Some will blame their age. Few will blame themselves.
A high proportion of cases of musculo-skeletal dysfunction are personally generated. Over the years and decades, peoples' muscles become weak and tight, causing bones to move out of alignment. That's the bad news.
The good news is that with the right strength and flexibility exercises there is a good chance that bones will move back into alignment. Stress will be taken off joints. Pain will dissipate.
Only on the rarest of occasions is joint and muscle pain caused by a lack of Glucosamine, Celebrex, Voltarin or Endone.
All it takes is a little time and not much effort to gradually re-align the skeleton.
The Pro-Active Rehab program to diagnose and treat common musculo-skeletal pain is simple. It provides clues as to which muscles have drawn the pelvis and the bones above it out of alignment. These muscles have to be retrained to allow the bones to move back in to alignment. The exercise prescription is closely associated with the information received from the diagnostic assessment.
One of our vaulting ambitions is to encourage the medical and allied health industries to embrace the Pro-Active Rehab technology for restoring poor musculo-skeletal health to good.
There is an epidemic or people with low mood, lacking energy and vitality, sleeping poorly, feeling tired, miserable and sad. They've got the blues.
The blues appears to be the normal condition of a lot of people who lack a good aerobic fitness training program. Accompanied by a diet high in flour, sugar, caffeine and alcohol, plus a lack of personal and career development, the prognosis is not good.
Some people who 'have the blues' get diagnosed as 'having the blacks', when in fact that may or not be the case.
The medical reaction is to prescribe a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medication, without first determining whether the brain is lacking in serotonin.
The medical reaction to 'the blues' and ' the blacks' often overlooks the need for aerobic exercise, nutritional and cognitive behavioural prescriptions. The process of restoring poor health to good is impeded.
The mind is just another part of the body and like all other parts, when the whole is in good condition it's likely that the parts will be in good condition as well. Expecting the mind to get better without the rest of the body getting better makes an already tough assignment just that much tougher.
We hold to the belief that when people do what fit and healthy people do to keep fit and healthy, they'll become fitter and healthier. The benefits of physical activity apply to all parts of the body, including those resident in the skull.
What we know is that a year's supply of daily aerobic activity trumps a year's supply of Prozac.
We recommend that people with personally-generated body system dysfunctions undergo a rigorous Pro-Active Rehab program, that they take charge of their own therapy under the guidance of Pro-Active Rehab coaches.
What we've done is make the complicated simple, the expensive cheap and the opaque transparent. We want the Pro-Active Rehab method to be within the reach of everyone who wants to get better.
We believe it's a big ask for anyone to stay healthy without keeping themselves fit. We believe it's an even bigger ask expecting to get better by having someone do something to them: sooner or later they have to do something to themselves.
